Bollywood Movie Inspirations

Many of the movies made in Bollywood are blatantly copied or partially plagiarized (from other movies). Some of them just take some inspiration and some of them are simply a remake and some even go to the extent of copying the original movie scene-by-scene. This article is an attempt to create a list of such copycat inspirations.

Great Work.

You managed to cover most of the Copy Cats.

Here are some more ...

Most of the Feroz Khan Movies were either inspired by Hollywood or a direct rip off :

one that comes to mind is :

Janbaaz - Anil Kapoor, dimple, Sridevi

was inspired by Duel in the sun starring :

Pearl Chavez . . . . . Jennifer Jones - Dimple
Lewt McCanles . . . . . Gregory Peck - anil kapoor.

there undoubtedly many more out there .. will keep sending you details as and when i remember them .. if at all you want to increase the database.

I am searching for a movie (definitely Indian, possibly Bollywood) that I have seen under the title "Marriage of Blood".

Plot: Man marries rich woman, kills her to inherit then marries her best friend (or sister?). But wife is not dead and returns after major plastic surgery to seek revenge and rescue her children. I think this movie was made in the 90's.

I believe it to be based on the Australian mini-series "Return to Eden" that was released in 1983

Does anyone know this movie?

Wendy,
You are probably looking for "Khoon Bhari Maang (1988)".

Thank you Akhilesh,
Khoon Bhari Maang was the movie I have been searching for & now I am trying to locate the DVD.
The Australian "Return to Eden" was good in a campy sort of way (it was a soap opera) but "Khoon Bhari Maang" just did it better.
Return to Eden has recently been released on DVD and I can send you a copy if you wish.

Here is another Indian movie I am trying to find (made about 95-2003)
PLOT:
Man marries woman & then discovers she wanted to marry another.
Husband takes his wife to Europe to reunite her with her true love.
In Italy the wife realises that her husband truely loves her as he is willing to sacrifice his happiness for hers. She realises this is a much deeper love than that of her infatuation with her 'true love' and husband & wife stay together.
Regards wendy

Yes that will be "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", a very *colorful* movie. Director has a flair of using colors to emphesize the situation which is prominent also in his other movies.

I have a few more additions:

1. Bazigar(Sharukh Khan) based on
A kiss before dying(1991; staring Sean Young).

2. 36 China Town is a copy of Once Upon a Crime (1992; staring Young).

3. Aitraaz is based on disclosure (1993; staring Demi Moore).

One thing is for sure - all abbas-mustan movies are English movie rip-offs.

4. Jism is a copy of Body Heat (1981; staring William Hurt)

few of the unknown inspired Bollywood movies!

National Award for Best Hindi Film winner Raghu Romeo (2003) is a direct rip-off of spanish director Pedro Almodovar's Atame! (1990...also known as Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down)

Dansh (2005) is a (BAD) remake of Roman Polanski's Death and the Maiden (1994)

Sangharsh (1999) is a copy of the classic Silence of the Lambs (1991) (what else can u expect from the Bhatt camp anyways)

Ek Din 24 Ghante (2003) is again a rip-off of German film Lola Rennt (1998...also known as Run Lola Run)

Gulzar's classic Parichay (1972) is inspired by The Sound of Music (1965)

and Josh (2000) by remaker Mansoor Khan is (infact a good) remake of musical West Side Story (1961)

hi...
u mentioned that Rang De Basanti copied plot details from a movie All my sons (1948)...but what is more interesting is it was a copy of the Denys Arcand Cannes Jury prize winning+oscar nominated film Jesus de Montreal/Jesus of Montreal...the fact that it was about disillusioned youth whose personal lives start resembling the characters they play in a nativity play was only part of it...but more importantly I was amazed to see the film style, mood and devices (merging the past with present)was copied or must I say inspired with giving due credit.

Judaii, starring Sri Devi, Anil Kapoor, and Urmila, is a remake of Indecent Proposal.

The twist on this one is that it is a rich socialite who wishes to marry Anil, rather than the one night stand portrayed in the original. Better than the original, Sri, Anil, and Urmila had really great chemistry!

Hey, there!

Landed up on your website whilst I was browsing through the links that appeared when I googled "Bollywood Inspired by The Usual Suspects".

Now, post watching The Usual Suspects, for the first time, I had this queer deja vu sort of a feeling about knowing in advance what the climax was going to be. It wasn't really the first time, though, that I was having this feeling. The forgetful person that I am, I get this feeling about a lot things that I do or that happen to me.

But something told me that this wasn't just another feeling. I could sense it was much stronger. Then, in this moment of "enlightenment" I googled the keywords and there it was - the first, second, third, even the fourth and sixth links.. all clearly having in bold font faces "Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets... inspired... The Usual Suspects"

Bingo!

Any which ways, there is a post that I came across on wikipedia about a host of Bollywood movies which are 'alleged inspirations" from (majorly) Hollywood movies. You might want to merge those that don't feature on your list from the list on wikipedia.

Just in case, here's the link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bollywood_films_and_plagiarism

Oh and by the way, great job on the detail. The Copy Level Indicator and the Copy Detail are of great utility when it comes to understanding the kind of an "inspiration" that one is talking about.

And, um, I had written "stuff" about Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and it being plagiarised off Anger Management and Meet The Parents but I found out after writing that bit that you already have it posted elsewhere on your website.

Well, what more do I say but that.. you're doing a great job, keep going.

Cheers.

i think the problem is bollywood movies dont take permission from the original filmmakers and dont pay for rights.
someone mentioned the departed was a copy..well firstly warner brothers paid for the rights to the property and 2- the structure of the films is very different though the plot is the same-- none of the shots or sequences are similar --- there is no sexual inadequacy subplot or sexual perversion theme in the original film. and no love triangle.

the problem with the indian films is that they copy not just the story but the shots . and that too without permission-that makes it tantamount to stealing.

1. Bheja Fry (2007)- "The Dinner Game"(1998)-original french name-"Le dîner de cons"
A group of French intellectuals gather each Wednesday for the dinner game, where the challenge is to bring along the most idiotic guest each can find. Pierre (Thierry Lhermitte) thinks he's found a ringer in François (Jacques Villeret), a civil servant whose passion is making architectural models out of matchsticks. But Pierre gets more than he bargained for when François becomes his houseguest -- and nursemaid!

2. Aamir (2008)- "Cavite" (2006) A Filipino movie. Filipino-American Adam (Ian Gamazon) comes face to face with contemporary geopolitical realities when he returns to his homeland to attend his father's funeral. Barely off the plane, Adam receives a chilling phone call saying Muslim terrorists have abducted and will kill his mother and sister if he doesn't comply with the radicals' demands.

3. Ghajini (2008)- The story plot from "Memento"(2000). Also, a scene in Ghajini-hindi is an exact copy of a scene from "Amelie" (The french movie "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001) starring Audrey Tatou)where the heroine helps a blind person cross the road.

4.Jane tu ya Jane na (2008)- "Forget Paris" (1995) As Mickey's (Billy Crystal) and Ellen's (Debra Winger) friends wait in a restaurant for the couple to arrive, the story of their relationship unfolds in a series of flashbacks.

5. Dil Kabaddi(2008) - "Husbands and wives" (1992)Woody Allen's critically acclaimed comedy finds two New York couples reexamining their marriages and discovering they want more.

6. Aitbaar (1985) - "Dial M for Murder" (1954) Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece of double-cross and intrigue stars Ray Milland as former tennis champ Tony Wendice, who concocts a plan to kill his rich and philandering wife, Margot Mary (Grace Kelly), who's embroiled in a heated affair with a writer, Mark Halliday (Robert Cummings). When Tony's plans go awry, he improvises with a second act of deceit, but the entire bloody affair turns out to be far messier than he expected.

7. "Gumnaam" (1965) "And Then There Were None" (1945) Agatha Christie's classic murder mystery (Ten Little Indians) delivers a stimulating dose of suspense in director René Clair's film adaptation. A mysterious, unknown host invites 10 strangers to a remote island mansion, where the guests discover there's a killer among them. The cast, headed by Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Huston, begins to shrink one by one, keeping the audience guessing until the credits roll.

8. "Dil hai ke maanta nahi" (1991)- "It happened one night" (1934) Runaway socialite Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) is en route to the Big Apple to elope with a fortune-hunting flyboy. Along the way she meets a crusty newspaperman (Clark Gable), who's just been sacked and -- unbeknownst to Ellie -- plans to sell her story to get his job back. But a string of zany misadventures leads them to realize they're madly -- if reluctantly -- in love.

9. "Satte pe satta" (1982) - "Seven brides for seven brothers" (1954) Set on a ranch in the Oregon Territory, this rousing musical tells the story of Adam (Howard Keel) and his six unruly brothers. Adam marries Milly (Jane Powell), who's appalled by the motley crew and takes it upon herself to tame them. Longing to become husbands like their brother, the boys go into town and kidnap six lovely women for themselves. Not without chaos and uproar, the boys and their wives eventually find happiness.

10. "Manpasand" (1980) - "My Fair Lady" (1964) Audrey Hepburn is at her most radiant as Eliza Doolittle, the Cockney flower girl transformed into a poised duchess by Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison.

11. Black - The Miracle Worker
(1962) A bout with scarlet fever has rendered Helen Keller (Patty Duke) blind, deaf and mute. When her parents can no longer cope with the feral girl's tantrums, they call in novice but innovative teacher Annie Sullivan (Anne Bancroft). Though Helen perceives sign language as a finger game, Annie's unflagging tutelage ultimately awakens in her charge the concept of words.

12. "Shaurya" (2008)- "A Few Good Men"(1992) When cocky military lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) and his co-counsel, Lt. Cmdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore), are assigned to a murder case, they uncover a hazing ritual that could implicate high-ranking officials such as shady Col. Nathan R. Jessep (Jack Nicholson). Director Rob Reiner's probing drama earned four Oscar nominations, and Nicholson's line, "You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!" became a '90s catchphrase.

13. Chak de India - The plot is a copy from "Miracle" (2004).Focused on achieving the impossible -- defeating the Soviet Union's unbeaten hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics -- brash U.S. hockey coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) unites a motley group of college athletes and turns them into a force to be reckoned with. Based on an improbable true story that shocked the world.

Also inspired was the 1997 movie Judaii, starring Anil Kapoor and Sri Devi, copied from Indecent Proposal, only with gender reversal. Rich NRI heiress woos the money hungry wife of the man she crushes on with a huge cash settlement, on the condition there is a divorce so he can marry the heiress, played by Urmila Matondkar. An improvement on the original material.

Mr Blue:

Yes that is true that there are lot many copied stuff, but that is not due to the fact that we Indians are not talented, but due to the fact that the Indian Movie Industry does not spend much on this part of the creativity. It prefers less experimentation, mostly because the funding source is not that clear.

Just check the reality of Indian Publishing industry. How many Indian author you find, especially in regional languages. And the price those books/novels available at. They are poorly paid and cater to a very limited readership.

But things are also changing. Now movie fundings are coming from reputed business houses with professional approach to the whole movie making. And indeed very good original story lines do come here and there. Whether they make it good on the box office is a different story.

Some good examples are "Kaminay", "Love Sex Aur Dhokha", "Well Done Abba" (though this one resembles a very old play).

Another one i didnt see in the list was Manorama Six feet under , A copy of china town.

Lastly, i sometimes feel the nana patekar starrer Prahaar is in someways an inspiration of Taxi Driver, atleast the themes in some sense are.

Good work though, documenting all the plaguarism through the years.

Dear Akhilesh:

Bobby:

The discussion on Partner v/s Snitch in your blog is not complete.

While every one talks of the initial problems between the 2 sides, the 2 sides later came to a 'settlement' with Sony Television getting TV rights for the movie.

This movie was a disgrace with both David Dhawan and Parag ?? (producer) giving some of the most S##tty comments - essentially arguing that their version is not a copy etc... and even asking how many people can be sued in this film industry ... (thereby acknowledging that many copies are made every year !!)

Regards,
SKR

Also, where would you place movies like Angoor (A comedy of errors), Maqbool (Macbeth) and Omkara (Othello) which are adaptations of Shakespeare dramas ... technically, the film makers need not take any permissions since they dramas are out of copyright, but I do NOT know if there was any 'acknowledgement' at the start of these movies...

Thanks Sandeep for completing the discussion.

Angoor I definitely remember honoring Shakespeare by acknowledging him in the movie. And even though not required by law they should mention it at least at the end of the movie as a moral obligation.
